Module 1 – Transforming Engineering Culture to Advance Inclusion and Diversity (TECAID): An Evidence-Based Approach & Model
Description
TECAID Learning Modules
Interested in changing the culture in your engineering department to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for faculty, staff, and students but unsure how to go about it? Why reinvent the wheel when you can learn from TECAID leaders and participants. Transforming Engineering Culture to Advance Inclusion and Diversity (TECAID) is a NSF funded project (#1445076) to assist Mechanical Engineering change leaders in fostering a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) academic engineering department culture.
The corner stone of these learning modules are webinars developed with intent to help make your DEI-focused culture change work more efficient and effective. A Certificate of Participation is available upon participation in each webinar. In addition to the above resources, we include additional resources as appropriate.
This webinar series is co-sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Committee on DEI.
Module 1 – Transforming Engineering Culture to Advance Inclusion and Diversity (TECAID): An Evidence-Based Approach & Model
In this 1st webinar (45:00), we share with you the TECAID story, outcome evidence, and application tools to facilitate your own department DEI culture change process.
Specifically, in this webinar we provide answers to the following questions:
- WHY engage in DEI-focused department culture change work? (2:20)
- WHAT are useful resources, and what is the evidence that using these resources can help engineers to lead DEI department culture change? (12:12)
- HOW does one lead DEI-focused engineering culture change using our new TECAID Model? (15:00) and
- WHO are other engineers engaged in leading DEI organizational change? (28:15)
Interviews with original TECAID PIs (40:00): TECAID Small Group PI Interview
To learn about TECAID from our original PI’s, please listen to this engaging interview by Liz Litzler (TECAID Evaluator), with Diane Matt (original TECAID PI from WEPAN), Tom Perry (original ASME Co-PI), and Klod Kokini (original Purdue University College of Engineering Co-PI)
Interviews with representatives from the TECAID Teams
Interview: Zahed Siddique (The University of Oklahoma) (11:59): The Role of Formal Leadership in Team Project Success
In this interview, Diane Matt (the original TECAID PI from WEPAN), explores the value of formal leadership support and strategies for sustaining culture change to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Interview: Rob Stone (Oregon State University) (9:41): Critical Resources for Leading DEI Department Culture Change
In this interview, Diane Matt (the original TECAID PI from WEPAN), explores the value of understanding resources and leaders within the academic institution that supports the goals of the department team project.
Interview: Nancy Barr (Michigan Technological University) (11:46): Managing Conflict Constructively
In this interview, Diane Matt (the original TECAID PI from WEPAN), explores constructive dissonance (i.e. management of conflict in a constructive manner) in a way that supports the goals of the department team project.
